A worldwide e-Infrastructure for NMR and structural biology

WeNMR User Survey 2011

The WeNMR project posted an online survey (http://www.wenmr.eu/wenmr/user-survey ) aimed to measure the awareness of the user community, and potential future users, on grid computing in general and on the services offered by the WeNMR project in particular. The survey was opened on October 31st, 2011 and advertised broadly to a wide structural biology community. E-mail postings were sent to the WeNMR users (VRC, VO) and diverse mailinglists (eg. like BioNMR and EastNMR users, HADDOCK, CYANA, CCPN and Xplor-NIH software users, the BMRB and X-ray, SAXS and Grid-communities).

The results of this survey will be used to improve the WeNMR services and define future objectives.

On 24th of November 2011, 176 people filled in the survey. The people who filled in the survey are spread around the globe:  59% was filled in by people from Europe, 24% from America and the remaining 17% from Asia and Australia. Most people that filled in the survey were familiar with grid & cloud computing. Only 11% was not familiar with grid computing and 22% with cloud computing.

About 63% of the respondents have used grid computing either via web-portals or a user interface and for 18% some colleagues in their lab do. Participants were also asked how they used grid computing in their work. Most modified example files or followed online tutorials. Some asked an expert in the lab or just followed the WeNMR site tutorials, use-cases or used the grid during a workshop or tutorial. Clearly most people are interested to use the grid-based tools in future and would like to learn more about grid computing.

A detailed analysis of this survey as of November 24th, 2011 (176 respondents) can be found in this PDF document.
